Focus on these 3 things to unlock your dream space (and finish that project)
One of my favorite Oprah quotes is, “you can have everything but not at the same time“. It’s one of those quotes I apply to everything and at times strongly disagree with. I also think of my clients who are living a full life. You know the ones, who have a robust social life, look good, have a good job, and just seem generally happy.
I’m not implying they have it all but seeing how they enjoy life is wonderful. I noticed that their homes are not as prioritized as the other areas of their life. If this sounds like you, these are the home organizing tips I need you to internalize.
What is Moderate Clutter anyway?
If you have several unfinished home projects, you have moderate clutter. Just like your life, when you’re passionate about something you’re all in and take action (this isn’t a bad thing). However, you organize solely on an exciting idea and that approach doesn't create sustainable systems that keep clutter in check.
Having moderate clutter also means you organize based on how you’re feeling and that’s not a strategy. I’m gonna share 3 things you can do to jumpstart your Spring Cleaning or pick up where you left off. So, from here on out, focus on creating a healthier balance between inspiration and follow-through. This is going to be the difference between walking into a room with pride knowing you completed it versus ignoring it and being anxious with shoulda, coulda, woulda’s
With that said, here’s your first Spring Cleaning task:
Spring Cleaning Task #1
Add one thing, remove one thing
You’re a visionary, with big ideas, and dreams. So naturally your space reflects this, again a wonderful thing. If kept unchecked or without the right systems to balance this part of you, your home can quickly become an unsupportive environment. So, to create a supportive environment with things and people that reflect where you want to go, try this:
Remove one thing from your space that doesn’t align with how you want to show up in the world. Once a day, go through one drawer, room, or area and pick one thing to remove then write down one thing you want to add. This can be to replace the item you let go of or just make the space better. This tip is just as much about decluttering as it is about slowing down to think about how the items in your home align with where you’re going.
Spring Cleaning Microtask #2
Revisit an old idea
We already know you’re not at a loss for ideas. Sometimes you may be paralyzed with what to do because you have so many. Aside from starting ideas because of your genius, you may start a new home project to avoid following through on a previous one. Instead of creating something new and doing unnecessary work, try this instead:
Look at what you’ve already done and revisit an old idea or mood board. This way, you can get reinvigorated from something you’ve already started and honestly remember who you are. Just select one idea from your notes or saved photos and commit to implementing it in your home this month.
Spring Cleaning Microtask #3
Hone in on one area
There’s a time when you’ll be able to move through different rooms and areas within one room. But in order to complete unfinished spaces on top of a full life, it’s gonna take a different approach. Instead of organizing several areas at once without having anything substantial at the end of the year, try this:
Hone in on one corner or area that will contribute to your biggest endeavor. Maybe you have an album on your phone of an afro boho glam living room. Start with one wall, what does that one wall need, the paint color, the accessories, the frames? Starting small in this way builds your confidence and moves the project to the finish line faster than trying to tackle the entire room. Do it this way so you can benefit from a completed space.
Reeling in your attention
These tasks work in tandem together and overlap for a reason. If you find yourself with so many unfished projects (at home and in your life) its because you’re a visionary. You’re about living life AND building a legacy- which leaves you doing all the things and overwhelming yourself. Or you get distracted by the things that don’t make the impact you need to keep going.
You can also focus on what you can stop doing, instead of what you need to do. For example, maybe you need to stop following that account that shares those irresistible Amazon finds.
Building a legacy is all fun and games until you gotta break that sucker down. The real work is taking your big vision (for your home and life) and having the discipline to break it up into years and months.
What I love about these tasks is that they can be applied to your home or projects. And no matter where/how you apply them your home will benefit. This is one of the impacts of having an organized space. The self-satisfaction from having a fully fleshed-out idea and executing it.
Why Issa Dee?
Issa Dee from Insecure AND Issa Rae in real life embodies what it means to be a Creative Homebody. You can see how after she got serious about what she wanted from her life and career, her space transformed too.
Use Issa’s focus on one thing as an inspiration to focus on one thing in your home. Tune into the room or area that will support you in whatever endeavor you want to execute.
Conclusion
To summarize your Spring Cleaning tasks:
Add one thing, remove one thing- so your space aligns more with who you are
Revisit an old idea - instead of starting something new when you already have the answers
Hone in on one area- so you can end your year proud and satisfied with a completed project
