11 Things You Can Get Rid of Right Now That Will Instantly Declutter Your Space

No matter how small, how hidden, how minuscule, there’s something about removing items from your home that you no longer use. They’re small items that go unnoticed but over time take up enough space so that when they're gone, you realize the negative impact they had being in your home.

  1. Duplicate wires- you know what I’m talking about. That one wire that can be used for everything, except you have 6 different sizes of them.

  2. Batteries- they pile up in all types of places in our home, if they’re no longer useful try collecting all unused batteries and recycling them.

  3. Bolts and Screws you no longer need (you can bring these to the hardware store and they’ll take them off your hands)

  4. Cleaning products- look underneath your bathroom and kitchen sink right now, how many products do you actually use? How many duplicate do you have? Check out the The Plastic Free store in Williamsburg for their in store waste recycling program. You may be able to recycle your eligible cleaning supplies with them.

  5. Excessive Utensils- Unless you often host friends and family, there is no reason to have 15 forks when only 5 people live in the home. Besides, removing dishes actually saves time because there’s less dishes to wash.

  6. Containers- One question, do you use it? No? Then why do you still have those 14 plastic container lids with no container to match it? You don’t have to throw out all your plastic containers, just the parts you don’t use. If possible, opt to match the top with their designator container. if you can’t find the match, toss those as well.

  7. Unused Keys- I’m not sure how it happens but somehow keys seem to come with us no matter where we move to. They get stashed away with our other miscellaneous items living with us forever. Collect all the unused keys in your home and drop them off at a hardware store or Home Depot.

  8. Shoes that hurt- Would you stay in a relationship with someone that hurt you every time you hung out? So, why would you keep shoes that hurt you every time you wear them? Everyone doesn’t have the option to get rid of shoes that hurt them. But if you do have the option, clear your space of all the shoes that you probably won’t bring to the shoe doctor that hurt your feet.

  9. Other People’s Stuff- Do people leave things in your home or you have items to give people but keep forgetting? Those items seem to accumulate over time and next thing you know you have your friend’s leather jacket for 5 years. It doesn’t have to be all in one day but make it a habit to return people’s belongings to them. If they're coming over or you’re meeting with them, set a reminder to return their item. It’s a win win, you clear your space and they get their things back.

  10. Items to Donate- Most people already know what they want to get rid of. You may have bags of clothes by your door or a box of giveaways in your bedroom. Set aside time to bring them out the house, again, it doesn’t have to be all in one day but be intentional and set the time aside to bring them to a shelter, donation bin, Salvation Army, or you can even have an organization pick them up for free. Google “free donation pick up“ to see if your location is eligible for a pick up.

  11. Pens that don’t work- Why we don’t throw these away immediately is beyond me. But this is pretty self explanatory. Unless it holds sentinel value or is a souvenir, ask yourself why you have a stack of pens that don’t work?

Rebekah Christie
Rebekah Christie began creating accessories in 2009 when she was living in Philadelphia. She was having trouble getting use to Philly being her permanent residence so she stayed home for months. She then began designing headbands and hair accessories. She was discovering her inner designer which was the beginning of "Make it Happen". She grew up in a very creative household where her parents promoted and delved in the arts themselves. In 2010 she moved back to New York, settling into Brooklyn for the next three years. Since she began her journey as a jewelry designer, she has built a following throughout New York City. Charmed Feathers has been sold at shops in Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and D.C. CF has also been sold in France and Canada. "The guidelines I follows are adapted from my family and into my designs. Myfather is a man that does not fear color, and Charmed Feathers accessories are always colorful and vibrant. My mother is a woman who taught me to be myself and to not follow the crowd. I like to believe that being true to yourself is as natural as you can get". -Rebekah Christie In 2012 she attended the Art Institute of New York majoring in Fashion Merchandise and Marketing.
